Educators demonstrate a broad knowledge base and an understanding of areas they teach.
When we become educators we are adapting the teaching lifestyle. I believe that this mean being a lifelong learner. I am always looking for opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in any capacity. I have always been like this therefore I believe I carry a vast knowledge base and I enter every opportunity with an open heart and open mind.
My Educational Journey
I attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Prince George for my elementary years. I was there from Kindergarten to grade 7. From there, I went to into Duchess Park Secondary. I briefly attended Prince George Secondary School as well to be apart of the hockey program and eventually found my way back to Duchess Park where I graduated in 2016. I then dove directly into University at UNBC and have been apart of the University community since. I pride myself int he effort I put into taking a vast array of different courses to broaden my knowledge the best I could. I eventually found my niche with First Nations Studies and Geography. 90 Credits later, I ended up in the Education Program at UNBC where I am so excited for all the learning and opportunities to come.
One of my biggest takeaways from my practicum experience would be, to plan backwards in a sense. For example, I started asking myself what is the END GOAL? What do I want the students to learn at the end of the lesson? From there I asked myself, what FPPL do I want my students to take away from this lesson? how can it be authentically embedded in the lesson? and then I started creating my lesson. Although, I did have to choose a subject before hand, I simply decided on Science for example, then I chose the end goal. I found that my lessons began to flow nicer in terms of student learning and that there is a huge difference between teaching the topic versus teaching the end goal. For me, this allowed me to be more creative and intentional with the process of lesson planning. Which ultimately gave me the opportunity to utilize and demonstrate my broad knowledge base as well as further expand it.
As a teacher I will strive to:
- Ensure that I follow a protocol that works for me to allow me to be more creative and intentional while creating lessons that align with the BC Curriculum, big ideas, content, core competencies, curricular competencies, learning standards, essential questions and all else that is encompassed in the process of lesson planning.
- Be an example of a life long learner for my students to inspire and encourage them to also become life long learners.
- Practice/model a growth mindset and positive disposition around learning to encourage myself and my students to always welcome new knowledge into their brains to further expand their knowledge base.
- Always be open to change and constructive criticism. We live in a time where things are constantly changing, in fact the only constant we have is change. As educators and life long learners I believe that it is important to always welcome new ways of doing things, new knowledge, and accept change. Some things that we may have learned when we were students could be completely different now due to further research and development and that is okay!
